Practical Information

Located on the shores of Lake Ounasjärvi and home to just 800 residents, Hetta is an authentic and vibrant Lapp village, south of which lies the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The village of Kilpisjärvi is located close to the border with Sweden and Norway, in a breathtaking landscape where fells rise to more than 1,000 metres, the highest in Finland. The Arctic Ocean is merely 40 km away.

Legends around the northern lights, or the Aurora Borealis by their scientific name, are many. The northern lights have always been respected and feared. In Finland, people used to believe that it was dangerous to say the name in Finnish, “revontuli” aloud. According to one old belief, laughing at this nocturnal phenomenon could even be lethal!
